Ithaca, NY --- The women's swimming and diving team walked away from its season opener with a split decision,n defeating the squad from William Smith (203-85) but falling to host Ithaca (211-83).  The Engineers saw strong performances from top to bottom but were but were propelled to the win over William Smith by a strong underclassmen performance. 
 
The race of the day saw first year Amber Jacobs (Cedar Falls, IA)  and sophomore Allie Marvell (Nashua, NH) traded the lead back and forth over 40 lengths of the pool. The first year Jacobs collected her first win of the season as she stopped the clock at 11:08.04, 2.19 seconds ahead of Marvell, whose time today of 11:20.23 is faster than any time she recorded last year. The older of the two got some revenge in the woman's 200 fly as Marvel finished in a time of 2:25.12 which was good for 3rd place with Jacobs finishing in 6th at 2:29.13. 

The pair crossed paths were once again in the woman's 500 free where it was Jacobs taking the silver in 537.59 while Marvell earned a 4th place finish with the time of 5:29.82 just ahead of fellow sophomore Kate Creusere (Las Cruces, NM) and her 5:30.67. 

Jacobs and Marvell teamed up for the final relay of the day, as the pair were joined in the 400 free relay by first year Mallory LaPointe (Saint John's, FL) and Junior Katrina Waite (Falmouth, ME). The quartet combined for a time of 3:51.57, which was good for third overall.  

In her individual events, LaPointe earned her first individual event win of her collegiate career as she posted the lone sub-2:00 time in the 200, hitting the wall in 1:58.32. She followed up the win with a pair of strong performances in the 100 free and 200 IM earning runner-up finishes in both. In the 100 she posted a time of 55.76, while in the 200 IM, despite a late charge in the closing yards, she was out touched by just .14, recording a time of 2:15.24. 

Jacobs and LaPointe were not the lone event winners for the Engineers as sophomore Sarah Kang (Richmond, VA) matched LaPointe's gold and double silvers. Kang used early speed in the 100 back to record a time of 1:00.03, narrowly eking out the win by 0.21. In the 200 back, it was her time to be out touched by .30 as she stopped the clock at 2:09.84. It was a similar result in the 100 fly as Kang was again just nipped at the line, with her 59.21 falling just .07 short of the win.

Also earning valuable points for the team were sophomore Milena Whitney (Bedford, NH) and first year Audrey Cook (Wakefield, MA). Whitney collected a second place finish in the 100 breast, going 1:11.24, while Cook earned fourth overall with her 1:11.55. Whitney added a third-place finish in the 200 breast, 2:35.83, where she was followed by first year Jasmine Lam's (Dracut, MA) 2:39.99.  

The team returns to action with a a Trick-or-Treat showdown on Friday, October 31st against fellow NEWMAC teams, Babson, Coast Guard and Smith. The quartet of rivals will be joined by Brandeis.
