Softball Boasts Five College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Selections

WORCESTER --- WPI Softball had five student-athletes named to the 2025 College Sports Communicators NCAA Division III Academic All-District Team as announced this week. Representing the Engineers were juniors Meg Sherwood and Destiny Lum, and sophomores Naomi Boldebuck, Virginia McKinney, and Sandy Fairbairn. All five earned the prestigious recognition for the first time in their careers.

WORCESTER --- WPI Softball had five student-athletes named to the 2025 College Sports Communicators (CSC) NCAA Division III Academic All-District Team as announced this week. Representing the Engineers were juniors Meg Sherwood (Norfolk, MA) and Destiny Lum (Kahalu?u, HI), and sophomores Naomi Boldebuck (Billerica, MA), Virginia McKinney (Larchmont, NY), and Sandy Fairbairn (Norton, MA). All five earned the prestigious recognition for the first time in their careers.
 
Sherwood, a two-time NEWMAC Academic All-Conference honoree batted .307 in 37 appearances with 27 hits, including six doubles, two triples, and two home runs. The junior outfielder added 14 RBIs, 20 runs scored, and six stolen bases while compiling a .489 slugging percentage and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. Sherwood is a mechanical engineering major owns an impressive 3.94 cumulative GPA.
 
Boldebuck was a mainstay in the circle, leading the Engineers with a 17–6 record and five shutouts across 32 appearances and 141.2 innings pitched. The sophomore pitcher struck out 87 batters while maintaining a 2.62 ERA and limiting opponents to a .246 average en route to earning NFCA All-Region II Second Team honors. Boldebuck is a mechanical engineering major and was named to the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Team for the first time in 2025 with a 3.89 GPA. 
 
Lum was a powerful presence at the plate, hitting .369 with 48 hits, 14 doubles, and four home runs while driving in a team-best 38 RBIs. The lone captain also scored 29 runs and slugged .569 over 41 starts as she was named to the All-NEWMAC first team. A junior civil engineering major, Lum earned her first NEWMAC Academic All-Conference selection in 2025 with a 3.52 GPA.
 
McKinney delivered another elite season defensively in center field, earning NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Year honors. At the plate, she hit .328 with 40 hits, including six doubles and seven triples, while adding 26 RBIs and 30 runs scored. The sophomore outfielder was a perfect 18-for-18 in stolen base attempts and posted a .988 fielding percentage. The sophomore mechanical engineering major started all 41 games, earned her first NEWMAC Academic All-Conference honor in 2025, and maintains a 3.91 GPA.
 
Fairbairn started all 41 games at shortstop and led the team in runs scored (43), while hitting .366 with 48 hits, eight doubles, two triples, and four home runs. The sophomore infielder totaled 26 RBIs, 22 stolen bases, and slugged .550. Fairbairn was named to the All-NEWMAC Second Team and recorded a .901 fielding percentage. A double major in computer science and data science, Fairbairn was a 2025 NEWMAC Academic All-Conference selection and carries a perfect 4.00 GPA.
 
WPI Softball wrapped up the 2025 campaign at 25-16 overall and 13-7 in NEWMAC play. The Engineers reached Game 8 of the 2025 NEWMAC Softball Tournament before falling to Wheaton. The 25-win season marked WPI's first since 2022 and the sixth time in the last 10 seasons that the program reached the milestone.
