Men’s Soccer Drops High Scoring Affair to Emerson 4-2
WORCESTER -- Emerson's Rohan Edwards (Preston, England) and Carlo Carson (Brooklyn, NY) connected on goals early in each half to propel the visiting Lions to an important 4-2 road victory over host WPI in a NEWMAC men's soccer contest played Wednesday evening on H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.
Emerson moves to 6-6-5 on the season and 3-3-1 in conference play. WPI falls to 5-6-5 overall and 2-4-1 in NEWMAC action. The Lions have 10 points and are tied with Springfield with fourth in the nine-team league with Salve Regina a point back in sixth place with nine points while WPI sitting at seventh with seven. The Engineers host Salve on Saturday at 3pm and must defeat the Seahawks to claim a spot in week's NEWMAC Tournament. Emerson secured its spot in the postseason and can earn a home game for sure with a victory over visiting MIT on Saturday,
Emerson began a frantic opening 45 minutes with a goal early in the 11th minute when a Rohan Edwards (Preston, England) cross found the head of Carlo Carson (Brooklyn, NY) for the rookie's third goal at 10:13. The hosts leveled the match just under 10 minutes later when Mike Montabana (Jamison, PA) blasted in a free kick from the left side about 25 yards out at 19:46. All three of the sophomore's goals this season have come from restarts or PKs.
The two teams traded goals just 3:14 apart after the half hour mark. Nayan Martlin (Laguna Beach, CA) pushed the Lions ahead at 31:37 when he took a pass from Nick Mirogiannis (Reading, MA) and chipped it over the keeper for his first career tally. The Engineers quickly leveled the match again at 34:51 as Nathan Araujo (Holliston, MA) sent a cross from the left side into the box and the subsequent defensive clear by Emerson was intercepted Erol Gumus (Montclair, NJ) who quickly tucked in a shot inside the near post for his first career marker.
The second half started similar to the first with the Lions denting the scoring column just 3:36 into the session with Edwards and Carson teaming up again, this time it was the first year setting up Edwards, who long shot dinged off the right post and into the goal. WPI did not respond this time as it the visitors that struck in the 55th minute when Edwards served a free kick to Cade Mallett (Gilroy, CA), who sent a nifty pass to Kyler Maira (Acton, MA), who tapped in his fourth goal to put Emerson up 4-2.
Emerson then turned to its defense with a 4-2 lead and the Lions, behind three second half saves from Asa Roberts (Guilford, CT), kept the Crimson and Gray off the scoreboard in the second half.
Savio Ketnouvong (Paxton, MA) played all 90 minutes in net for the Engineers, registering one stop. For the game, WPI had a slight 11-9 edge in shots and a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Both teams wrap up regular season play with NEWMAC home affairs on Saturday afternoon. WPI entertains Salve Regina at 3pm while Emerson hosts Charles River rival MIT at 1pm.
