Ursinus Bats Doom Baseball in Myrtle Beach Matchup
Myrtle Beach, SC --- The WPI baseball team dropped an 11-3 decision to Ursinus on Tuesday afternoon at Pelicans Ballpark in Myrtle Beach. The Engineers (1-3) fell behind early and could not overcome a 13-hit performance from the Bears (8-3).
WPI was led by Jack Zawacki (Pittsford, NY), who finished 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a pair of runs score. Andrew Cash (Marlboro, MA) added a double and an RBI, while Tommy Burns (Morris Plains, NJ) had a run-scoring single and Chuck Cappello (Southboro, MA) contributed a pair of hits, Camden Willems (The Woodlands, TX) notched an infield single.
Dominic Monico (Litchfield, NH) took the loss for WPI, allowing seven runs on seven hits over four innings while striking out four. Damon Chase (Rye, NH) followed with two solid innings of relief, allowing just one run, while Gage Nagy (Monroe, WA) tossed a scoreless eighth.
Ursinus was paced by Andrew Richter (Chester, NJ), who went 4-for-5 with three RBI. Peter Balos (Bradenton, FL) finished 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, while Brandon Sullivan (Middletown, DE) scored four times.
For Ursinus, Chase Martin (Downingtown, PA) earned the win, pitching six strong innings, allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Max Shilstone (San Rafael, CA), David Morgan (Venice, FL), and Connor Bogansky (Oreland, PA) each threw a scoreless inning in relief.
Ursinus jumped ahead in the first inning as Sullivan came around to score on an RBI single by Balos. The Bears tacked on two more runs in the second, including a sacrifice bunt RBI from Cantor and a run-scoring single by Richter to push the lead to 3-0.
WPI responded in the third when Zawacki, but doubled to center field to drive in Wiberg. Burns followed with an RBI single to right, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
Ursinus broke the game open in the fourth with four runs, highlighted by a two-run single from Richter and a two-run homer by Balos, making it 7-2. WPI trimmed the lead in the sixth when Cash doubled to right center to bring home Zawacki, but the Bears answered in the bottom half as Sullivan scored on an RBI groundout by Cantor to restore a five-run lead.
The Bears put the game out of reach in the seventh, scoring three more runs. Nestor delivered a two-run single, and Williams followed with an RBI double down the right-field line to push the lead to 11-3.
WPI continues its Myrtle Beach Spring Break Tournament schedule with a 9am matchup against FDU-Florham on Wednesday. Ursinus will face SUNY Canton at 12:30pm tomorrow.
