Volleyball Slips to Coast Guard in Tuesday NEWMAC Road Tilt
New London, CT --- WPI Volleyball fell to Coast Guard in a Tuesday night conference road match in straight sets (14-25, 22-25, 19-25) inside Roland Hall.
Coast Guard, ranked sixth in the most recent NCAA Division III Region II rankings, is now 15-9 overall and 5-4 in conference play while the Engineers drop to 10-13 on the season and 2-7 in NEWMAC action.
The hosts fired away quickly as the Bears posted four consecutive kills to get the offense rolling. Coast Guard posted 19 total kills at a .485 clip. Anastasia Kelnik (Fair Lawn, NJ) and Olivia Hutchinson (Erie, PA) registered three kills each to stay within reach but the hosts erupted with a six-point run to increase the deficit to seven points at 12-5. Down the stretch, Hutchinson, Amelia Lynch (Charlottesville, VA) and Zeala VanDamme (San Diego, CA) tacked on kills to bring the set to a single-digit margin before the Bears wrapped up the set 25-14.
In the second set, the Engineers held an early 6-3 advantage backed by Fiona Gillis (Manchester, NH), Hutchinson and Bridget Spees (Saint Johns, FL). Both squads then alternated the next five kills and the set continued to stay within a tight margin as the score did not exceed a two-point gap until the Bears registered three consecutive kills to jump to a 19-15 lead. WPI continued to string kills but Coast Guard's Amelia Matson (Mililani, HI) closed out the set with the final three attacks for the hosts to win the second set 25-22.
Coast Guard's Matson, Eloise Shirley (Rock Island, IL) and Sarah Somer (Cary, NC) got the offense moving in the third set with early kills helping the hosts to a 5-1 lead. WPI's Kelnik and Spees exchanged kills with Coast Guard's Somer and Abigail Schweitzer (Emmaus, PA) as the hosts pushed the lead to 9-4. Schweitzer, Matson and Corey Lemmer (San Francisco, CA) rattled off kills to extend the lead to 14-7 before VanDamme and Kelnik responded with three kills to close the gap at 16-13. The Bears remained steady with five kills in their last nine points to secure the straight-set victory
Matson (14), Somer (11) and Schweitzer (10) all recorded double-digit kills as Ava Ahokovi (Honolulu, HI) and Holly Davis (Sister, OR) combined for 44 assists. WPI's Kelnik and Spees led the attack with eight kills apiece as Hutchinson added seven. Lauren Boycourt (San Diego, CA) and Preslie Jerebker (Denver, CO) dished out 14 and 13 assists respectively. Defensively, Abby Harrington (Londonderry, NH) accounted for 14 digs as Taylor Simpson (Ashland, MA) and Spees tallied 10 apiece.
WPI closes out its non-conference portion of its regular season on Saturday, venturing to Hoboken, NJ for a tri-match with host Stevens and Eastern (PA) with action beginning at 11:30am.
