Martineau Named NEWMAC Field Hockey Defensive Athlete of the Week
Marlboro, MA --- WPI Field Hockey's Eve Martineau (Greene, ME) has been selected as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey Defensive Athlete of the Week for the week ending on October 26th.
Joining Martineau in this week's conference honors was MJ Owens of Mount Holyoke, who was tabbed as the NEWMAC Offensive Athlete of the Week.
The senior defensive midfielder delivered clutch performances on both ends of the field to help the Crimson and Gray post back-to-back shutout victories over league opponents. Martineau recorded a defensive save and netted the lone goal of the match with just 2:43 remaining in Saturday's 1-0 road win at Wellesley. Earlier in the week, Martineau anchored a defensive unit that blanked MIT in a thrilling 1-0 overtime triumph leading to WPI's first win over Cambridge's Engineers since 2018 and first in Worcester since 2009.
Behind the senior captain's leadership, the Engineers held their opponents scoreless for 133 minutes and 45 seconds across the two matches while facing 25 total shots, including 12 on goal. The week's results improved WPI to 12-4 overall and 7-1 in NEWMAC play, solidifying its place among the league's elite defensive teams.
This marks the second NEWMAC weekly honor of the season for the Crimson and Gray, following Myles Lakin's selection as Defensive Athlete of the Week to open the 2025 campaign.
WPI wraps up the regular season play on Saturday, November 1st, hosting Smith at 12pm on H. Carr Field.
