Martineau’s Late Strike Propels Field Hockey Past Wellesley in Tight NEWMAC Battle
Wellesley, MA — Eve Martineau (Greene, ME) broke a scoreless deadlock with under three minutes remaining as WPI field hockey earned a gritty 1-0 road victory over Wellesley in NEWMAC action played Saturday afternoon at Butler Stadium.
The triumph pushes WPI to 12-4 overall and 7-1 in NEWMAC play, while Wellesley drops to 5-11 on the season and 3-5 in conference action. The Engineers also improved their win streak to three heading into the final week of the regular season.
After a defensive stalemate for much of the afternoon, the Crimson and Gray finally capitalized late in the fourth quarter. Following a penalty corner at 57:08, Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, MA) fired a low ball into the circle that found Martineau, who calmly redirected it home at 57:17 for her fourth goal of the season and second game-winner of the year.
The Engineers dominated possession throughout, holding a commanding 18-8 advantage in total shots and a 10-3 margin in penalty corners. WPI peppered the Wellesley cage with nine shots in the decisive final frame, but the Blue goalkeeper Hannah Simmonds (Austin, TX) stood tall for much of the day, finishing with nine saves.
Offensively, Abbey Powers (Halifax, MA) generated a game-high six shots, including three on goal, while Meinhold, Chloe Luongo (Amherst, NH), and Ella Reeners (Windham, NH) each contributed quality scoring chances.
Defensively, Myles Lakin (Reading, MA) turned aside the only shot on goal he faced en route to his fifth clean sheet of the campaign, supported by a disciplined back line that limited Wellesley to just two attempts on frame.
For the hosts, Ceci Miller (Lewiston, ME) and Claudia Summers (San Diego, CA) led the offense with two shots apiece, while Madeline Hamstra (Houston, TX) added a pair of attempts. Annika Schermerhorn (Clifton Park, NY) and Adriana Eliopulos (Oakwood, OH) provided steady minutes in the forward rotation, and Marguerite Greene (Boston, MA) anchored a defensive corps that kept WPI at bay until the closing minutes.
WPI outshot Wellesley 18-8 overall and held a 10-3 edge in corners. Lakin collected the win in goal for the Crimson and Gray, while Simmonds shouldered the hard-luck loss despite her nine stops.
Both teams conclude regular season play next week. WPI returns home to host Smith in its regular season finale on Saturday at 12pm, while Wellesley remains home to host Saint Joseph's (ME) on Tuesday at 6pm.
